Nadi Jothidam

History of Nadi Astrology

According to legend, in the year 1540, the Mughal forces attacked the palace of Tanjore and stumbled upon a collection of ancient Nadi leaves hidden within the palace's secret chambers. Unfortunately, these leaves held little significance for the invaders, and they ordered their destruction. That night, the revered Sage Agasthya appeared in a dream to a Brahmin astrologer, urging him to rescue the priceless Nadi leaves from impending doom. Undertaking a journey of approximately 120 kilometers, the astrologer miraculously found the leaves intact.

Sage Agasthya rewarded the astrologer with a promise that he and his descendants would experience success and prosperity for their noble act of preservation. Thus, the astrologer's lineage became known as the “Shiva family,” who would become the original guardians of the Nadi manuscripts, dedicating themselves to the spiritual legacy of Nadi predictions.

With time, the Nadi leaves became dispersed. During the Chola dynasty's reign in Tanjore, efforts were made to collect and categorize these invaluable manuscripts, which were safeguarded in the Saraswati Mahal. However, many leaves were ultimately lost due to destruction during the Muslim invasions, while others were sold or auctioned during the British colonial period. Only those leaves that contained knowledge about medicinal herbs and alchemy were retained. The astrologers from the Valluvar community, based around Vaitheeshwaran Koil near Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, regarded these Nadi leaves with great reverence, establishing Vaitheeshwaran Koil as the central hub of Nadi astrology.

Astrologers earned their livelihoods through Nadi predictions, having been trained in interpretation by their elders in a tradition handed down through generations. In the 13th century, some of the scattered Nadi leaves in Vaitheeshwaran Koil were gathered and preserved under Maratha ruler King Serfoji II, a patron of the arts and sciences. He ensured their protection by storing them in the illustrious Saraswati Mahal in Tanjore. Today, Vaitheeswaran Koil remains the epicenter of Nadi astrology, where various Brahmin communities possess bundles of Nadi leaves, some of which have even been dispersed to other parts of India. Among the various forms of Nadi predictions, Shiva Nadi Jyotisha stands out as particularly popular.

To make predictions, an individual's thumb impression is taken as it is believed there are 108 distinct types of thumb prints in existence. Nadi leaves are not confined to India; they can also be found in Sri Lanka, Tibet, and Nepal, written not only for those of Indian descent but for souls across the globe searching for solace from their suffering. Each leaf is destined for a select few, and when the time is right, a person may come across the leaf that signifies a transformative chapter in their life.

Maharajah Serfoji II of Tanjore, a celebrated patron of arts and sciences, ensured the Nadi leaves were preserved within his palace library for future generations. During British rule, these manuscripts were retrieved and eventually sold to families who continue to care for them diligently. These families maintain the knowledge and skill to properly interpret the leaves, thereby allowing individuals to benefit from the ancient wisdom of the Siddhas, now referred to as the Nadi family. One of the esteemed Nadi readers in this region is Mr. Velmurugan, who comes from a distinguished lineage of Nadi astrological practitioners.

In the 12th century, these invaluable leaves were discovered in the ancient site of Vaitheeshwaran Koil in Tamil Nadu. The Nayanar community recognized their significance, meticulously creating copies and becoming custodians of the Nadi leaves ever since. This community has, for generations, been the exclusive practitioners trained to read and interpret these leaves, keeping the traditional practice of Nadi astrology alive. The original writings were believed to be inscribed on animal hides, with subsequent texts transcribed onto palm leaves, and these manuscripts were preserved using oil derived from peacock's blood. Today, Vaitheeshwaran Koil serves as the primary center for Nadi astrology in South India.
